Botox, Dysport  |  Wrinkle Filler FAQ’s

What is Botox?

Botox cosmetics is a purified protein. It is a non surgical-administered treatment that can temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in patients 18 to 65 years of age. During treatment, very low doses of Botox cosmetics are administered via a few tiny injections into the muscles that cause stubborn lines between the brows, also known as the ‘11 lines’.

Is Botox FDA approved?

Botox Cosmetics is the only treatment of its type approved by the FDA for this use. The treatment is minimally invasive and non surgical. It requires no recovery time and causes little discomfort.

What causes frown lines between the brows?

The lines that appear between your brows actually result from muscle movement and the passage of time.

Two muscles are largely responsible for frown lines between the brows. When those muscles contract, they draw the brows together. As skin becomes less elastic over time, repeated frowning can result in those moderate to severe lines between your brows.

How does Botox Cosmetics help?

Botox Cosmetic works by blocking nerve impulses, which reduces the movement of those muscles. With less movement, the skin surface gradually smoothes out, and the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows begin to fade.

What is the treatment like?

Botox Cosmetic is a quick and minimally invasive treatment. Dr. Murphy makes a few tiny injections into the muscles that cause moderate to severe frown lines between your brows. Dr. Murphy will determine exactly where to administer the injections to achieve the best results. No anesthesia is required, although he may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injecting. The entire procedure take approximately 10 minutes. Discomfort is minimal and brief - most patients compare the sensation to a bug bite. You may resume normal activity immediately.

How soon will I see a difference?

You can expect to see results within days after your treatment. The appearance of the area between your brows may continue to improve for up to a week.

What kind of results can I expect?

By day 30 in a patient clinical study, 89% of patients judged the severity of their frown lines between their brows as moderate or better. Visible results can last up to four months. After that you may be ready to return for a follow up treatment. Patients with neurological disorders such as ALS, Myasthenia Gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects. The most common side effect include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. Other side effects include pain and redness where the medicine is injected, pain in the face, and muscle weakness. These effects generally occur within the first week and usually go away on their own. Your own results may vary - be sure to talk to Dr. Murphy about what you can expect.

How soon will I need a second treatment?

The effect of each treatment can last up to four months - be sure to schedule your follow-up treatments in advance.

What happens if I decide not to continue?

If you decide not to continue with Botox Cosmetic, the area between the brows will eventually go back to its pre-treatment appearance.

How does Botox Cosmetic compare to other options?

Compared to other aesthetic treatment options, Botox Cosmetic is relatively inexpensive. According to a survey by The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, it’s one of the least costly facial aesthetic procedures. And when you consider the difference it can make in the appearance of the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows, you may find Botox Cosmetic to be a great way to invest in yourself.

How do I know if Botox is right for me?

If you are between 18 and 65, you may be a candidate for Botox cosmetic. If you feel that reducing the appearance of those moderate to severe frown lines between your brows might make you look more approachable, Botox may be right for you. Come in for a consultation on the days Dr. Murphy is scheduled to be at ASerenity Skin | Body.

What are Restylane and Perlane?

The Resylane family of products includes Restylane and Perlane. Both are  cosmetic dermal fillers. that replace lost volume and restore youthful contours to the skin to smooth away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds).

How do I choose between Restylane and Perlane?

You don’t have to. In clinical trails, Restylane and Perlane were used in the same patients. The hyaluronic acid in both products is made by the same biotechnical process. The difference is in the gel particle size. Perlane gel particles are larger and designed for deeper injection than Restylane. Dr. Murphy will decide which product is right for you.

What is Dysport?

Dysport™ is an acetylcholine release inhibitor and a neuromuscular blocking agent indicated for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines associated with procerus and corrugator muscle activity in adult patients under 65 years of age.  Basically, it is an injectable used to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and frown lines in the face. It is made using small amounts of abobotulinumtoxinA.  Used in very small, controlled amounts, the toxin relaxes the muscles in the face thereby allowing the overlying skin to relax.

What is the difference compared to Botox?

Botox prices have steadily risen and now seems to have stabilized now, but it still may have a slightly higher price point than Dysport, currently in most practices.  It (Dysport) appears to have a faster onset and it appears to maybe having a longer life span (about four months).  Your individual results may vary.
